5 Silk Sleep Masks, Compared: Which Brand Actually Delivers Deep Sleep

Slip, Drowsy, Holistic Silk, Alaska Bear and Dore & Rose — tested side by side across 30 nights on the road. Here is what each brand does well, where it falls short, and which one wins on the specs that matter.

Five silk sleep masks lined up for testing

Photo: The Sleep Report

I am an Executive Assistant and I have spent 8 years sleeping in trade-fair hotels — thin curtains, hallway noise, 5 a.m. wake-ups — plus the overnight sleeper trains and long-haul flights in between. On the road, deep sleep is the first thing you lose, and a good silk mask is the cheapest way to claw some of it back.

So I bought the five most-recommended silk masks with my own money and ran them through the same 30 nights: Slip, Drowsy, Holistic Silk, Alaska Bear and Dore & Rose. No story, no drama — just which mask blocks the most light, stays on when you roll over, doesn't trap heat, and survives life in a carry-on. Below is the side-by-side table, what each brand is known for, and the full per-product breakdown.

How I tested

30 nights. 5 masks. Same conditions.

  • 21 nights across 4 trade fairs in Frankfurt, Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Milan
  • 4 long-haul economy flights (one to Shanghai, three within Europe)
  • 3 nights on Nightjet sleeper trains between Vienna, Hamburg, and Milan
  • 2 nights at airport hotels during Lufthansa schedule delays
  • Each mask scored on blackout, fit, material, travel resilience and value
  • Deep-sleep minutes tracked · every mask bought with my own money, no brand involvement

Dore & Rose Deep Sleep Mask
Dore & Rose
Best Overall
Densest silk (23 momme), silver-ion + Oeko-Tex, true blackout and an adjustable strap. The only mask that ticked every box.
Slip Pure Silk Sleep Mask
Slip
Heritage luxury
Beautiful 22-momme silk and the prettiest feel — but a fixed strap that slips off and light leak at the nose.
Drowsy Silk Sleep Mask
Drowsy
Padded comfort
Cocoon-like padding and excellent blackout, undone by memory foam that traps heat and bulk that fights train bunks.
Holistic Silk Lavender Eye Mask
Holistic Silk
Lavender-filled
Beautifully made in England, but the lavender filling polarises (headaches for me) and it is spot-clean only — impractical on the road.
Alaska Bear Natural Silk Sleep Mask
Alaska Bear
Budget pick
Real silk for very little money. Fine as an emergency travel mask; thin 19-momme, loose elastic and nose-light keep it last.

The Dore & Rose is the only mask in this test that passed every spec line. The silk is 23 momme — denser than the 22-momme Slip, Drowsy and Holistic Silk — so it is smoother and blocks more light, and a silver-ion antibacterial treatment plus Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification puts it ahead of every rival on skin contact. In use, the blackout was total with no nose leak, and the adjustable strap held through a Nightjet sleeper between Vienna and Hamburg when the train hit a rough patch near Linz at 2 a.m. My sleep tracker logged seven-plus hours of actual sleep, deep-sleep minutes well up from my Slip baseline.

It also handled travel better than masks costing more: it packs flat, doesn't crease, and stayed cool in dry hotel air where the padded Drowsy overheated. At a mid-tier price with a 100-night return window, it is the best value of the five as well as the best performer.

"The only mask here that wins on the spec sheet and in the hotel room — densest silk, true blackout, adjustable strap, best return policy."
Pros
  • 23-momme mulberry silk (denser than 22)
  • Silver-ion antibacterial treatment
  • True 100% blackout, no nose leak
  • Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified
  • Fully adjustable strap · 100-night return
Cons
  • Limited-edition colours sell out fast

What Slip brings: the nicest material feel of the five. The 22-momme mulberry silk is lovely against the skin and the brand has been a Sephora staple since 2004, with 30-plus colours. Where it falls short is the engineering — the elastic strap is not adjustable, so it crept down to my neck by 4 a.m. on the second night at Drupa in Düsseldorf, and light leaks at the nose. No antibacterial treatment, no Oeko-Tex. A beautiful mask that underperforms its premium price once you are actually asleep.

Pros
  • 22-momme mulberry silk
  • Beautiful brand since 2004
  • 30+ colour options
Cons
  • Strap not adjustable — slips off in sleep
  • Light leaks at the nose
  • No antibacterial, no Oeko-Tex

What Drowsy brings: comfort and blackout. The padded silk construction is genuinely lovely — almost a cocoon for the face — and it blocks light superbly when it stays on. The problem is heat and bulk: by 2 a.m. at Anuga in Cologne the memory foam had warmed up and I woke with a damp forehead, and the third night I tore it off overheating. Too thick for train bunks and economy seats, and the velcro is hit-or-miss. Great at home in winter; a poor travel companion.

Pros
  • 22-momme silk with padded cocoon
  • Excellent blackout when it stays on
  • Award-winning brand
Cons
  • Memory foam traps heat
  • Too thick for train bunks and economy seats
  • Velcro reliability issues
  • No antibacterial, no Oeko-Tex

What Holistic Silk brings: craftsmanship and aromatherapy. It is the most beautifully made mask here — sewn in England, filled with dried lavender, lovely to look at. But the lavender polarises: on a Nightjet between Vienna and Milan it went from spa-like to suffocating by 1 a.m. in the uneven ventilation of the sleeper carriage, and by day three at home it gave me a small headache I could not explain otherwise. Because of the filling it is spot-clean only, which is impractical after several nights on the road.

Pros
  • 22-momme silk, beautifully crafted
  • Made in England since 1999
  • Lavender aromatherapy (if you like it)
Cons
  • Lavender polarises — gave me headaches
  • Spot-clean only — impractical for travel
  • Light leaks at the nose
  • No antibacterial, no Oeko-Tex

What Alaska Bear brings: real silk at a rock-bottom price, with 23,000+ Amazon reviews behind it. For the money, the first two nights at home in Cologne were perfectly fine. But the spec sheet shows why it ranks last — only 19 momme, the thinnest silk here — and on the twelve-hour flight to Shanghai the elastic had loosened by the second hour and slipped off twice during turbulence, with light leaking at the nose throughout. A fine emergency mask to keep in a carry-on; not a serious long-haul tool.

Pros
  • Real silk at a low price
  • 23,000+ Amazon reviews
  • Decent for occasional travel
Cons
  • Only 19 momme — entry-level density
  • Elastic stretches within weeks
  • Light leaks at the nose
  • No antibacterial, no Oeko-Tex

The verdict

On the spec sheet and in the hotel room, one mask wins: Dore & Rose. It is the only one of the five that combines the densest silk (23 momme), silver-ion and Oeko-Tex certification, true blackout, an adjustable strap and the best return policy — at a mid-tier price. Slip is the prettiest, Drowsy is the coziest at home, Holistic Silk is the most beautifully made, and Alaska Bear is the cheapest. But if you want one mask that does everything well, especially on the road, this is the one to buy.

Frequently asked

What does "23 momme" actually mean?
Momme is the weight measurement for silk fabric — similar to thread count for cotton bedding. The higher the number, the denser the fabric. 19 momme is entry level (Alaska Bear). 22 momme is the standard premium grade used by Slip, Drowsy and Holistic Silk. 23 momme is denser, smoother, and more durable. Luxury silk sheets max out around 25.
Is the silver-ion treatment safe for sensitive skin?
Yes — the silver ions are bonded to the silk fibre at the textile level, not applied as a topical product. The mask is hypoallergenic and dermatologist-backed. Among 500,000+ customers, sensitive-skin users (eczema, rosacea, hormonal breakouts) consistently report no irritation.
Which mask is best for travel?
Dore & Rose. It packs flat, doesn't crease, keeps its adjustable strap tight when you roll over, and stays cool in dry cabin and hotel air — the things that make the padded Drowsy, the lavender-filled Holistic Silk and the fixed-strap Slip and Alaska Bear slip, overheat or smother on the road.
I wear lash extensions. Will it crush them?
The Dore & Rose Deep Sleep Mask is flat-design. If you wear lash extensions or have sensitive eye sockets, look at a raised eye-cup mask — the Dore & Rose AURA variant with raised cups.
What if it doesn't work for me?
Dore & Rose has a 100-night risk-free trial — the most generous in this test. Sleep with it for 100 nights and if you do not love it, return it for a full refund, no restocking fees or return shipping costs.
